You don’t have to be an advanced artist! Gouache is easier than you think.
I spent a lot of time perfecting gouache techniques. Through a lot of trial and error, I discovered some key learnings that allowed me to more easily paint with gouache. With some help, I know you can, too! You will see, gouache is more forgiving than other mediums. Watercolor actually uses the paper as its white making it difficult to lighten up while gouache can be layered light to dark or dark to light, making it really easy to create depth and more vibrant paintings. Gouache is so fun to paint with! It is more opaque and contrasts more easily than watercolor. I can’t wait to show you how!
I created this online course to help give you the tools and insights needed to master gouache.
I’ve spent years and countless hours exploring and evolving my style as an artist. Through my specialized techniques using basic shapes, layering, and shading, I create pieces of art that are easy to follow and exciting to look at. I have tons of tips and advice on how to accomplish this that I can’t wait to share with you.

10 ART PROJECTS
I created ten art projects specifically designed to teach you not only how to paint with gouache but how to compile floral elements into a full composition. Once we cover the basics about gouache and learn several techniques, we will jump into these projects where we will learn how to paint simple florals and leaves, detailed flowers, and finish with a full composition of a vase with flowers.
Once we learn about gouache and go over some gouache techniques, we will begin painting some easier florals including small flowers and branches. Using just a couple of brushes and few paint colors, we will learn how to paint some easy florals.
For our second project, we will practice and paint leaves. Leaves can be so satisfying and relaxing to paint. It’s one of my favorite things to paint alongside flowers. I will show you an easy technique on how to paint simple leaves using just a couple of paint colors and brushes.
For our third project, we will continue painting leaves yet with a different style. We will learn how to use lighter and darker colors to create depth of leaves while we paint beautiful eucalyptus leaves.
For project four, we will learn how to paint a leaf on a larger scale. Using just two colors and a couple of brushes, we will adjust our mindset from painting a bunch of little leaves to focusing on painting just one larger leaf that would be seen with particular flowers.
Moving on to our detailed flowers, in project five we will learn how to paint a poppy flower. Using just five colors and a few brushes, we will learn the basics of layering gouache to create a stylish and detailed flower.
In project six, we will move on to painting two flowers with a different perspective. Using the same techniques we learned with the poppy, we will adjust to painting two cosmos flowers with layers of gouache that give detail and perspective.
In project seven, we will learn how to layer gouache on top of a vibrant background while learning how to paint some simple chamomile flowers.
Once we are comfortable painting larger leaves, covering larger areas with gouache, and layering details to create detailed flowers, we will learn how to paint a large sunflower.
In our final project, we will bring together everything we have practiced to paint a full composition. At this point, we have learned how to paint eucalyptus, leaves, chamomile flowers, cosmos, poppies, and a large sunflower so we will bring all of those elements together to paint a layered vase of flowers.
With this bonus project, we will paint one of my favorite things — a desert landscape. Using only four colors of gouache, I will teach you how to paint a simple background, cacti, and a moon. Also, I will compare the acryla and traditional gouache with side-by-side pieces.

Meet Your Teacher: Philip Boelter
From a young age, I loved to paint and draw the nature that surrounded me living in Southern California. To this day, I am still inspired by the flora and fauna around me. My passion for art never faded and I went on to earn a second bachelor's degree at the Academy of Art University.
My passion for art has grown with the community that I love to share and inspire. Over the last several years, I have amassed a following of over 730k+ on Instagram, 800k+ on Pinterest, 150k+ on Facebook, 100k+ on TikTok, and 20k+ on YouTube. I’ve been featured and shared on tons of curated accounts including Buzzfeed, 9gag, and Tastemade. My videos have helped inspire new and old generations to paint. Every like, follow and comment has made me want to give back in a way that I can help more of these fellow artists grow on their own journey.
My practice has evolved over the years from pastel to oil and acrylic to watercolor. I’ve explored every medium, but I’ve found love with gouache. Although my mediums have changed, I’ve always been inspired by flowers, cacti, and landscapes.
I’ve now hosted several solo art shows, produced custom art for clients, and run a thriving e-commerce shop for my art.
I pride myself on the online community around Boelter Design Co. I’ve been so inspired to see how my art has helped other artists from beginner to advanced get into gouache and find inspiration. I am so excited to more directly help teach others with my online course. Most people are too intimidated to try gouache, but I am here to help you.
I hear this all the time from my followers on social media. I'm here to show you that gouache doesn’t need to be complicated.
Gouache painting — made easy. I've spent years practicing gouache, testing new techniques, making mistakes, and discovering ways of painting with gouache that have allowed me to explore and perfect this exciting medium. Let me help you learn gouache by following my guided techniques in this online course so you too can paint with gouache. I'm excited to share these techniques with you so you can explore gouache and discover your new style of painting.
Gouache is my favorite medium and could be yours, too. Gouache has recently been gaining a lot of attention and popularity due to its vibrant and opaque nature. It's my favorite medium for that exact reason. Yet, so many people are too intimidated to try it. I was, too! I kept using watercolor even though I was amazed by the beautiful paintings produced by gouache. When I finally got the courage to use gouache after trying to get out of some tricky creative block, I immediately fell in love and found my new style. If only I had started sooner and not wasted so much time on other mediums! I'm confident gouache will be your favorite medium, too.
